Is the Disney Lightning Lane Premier Pass Worth the Splurge?

When planning a Walt Disney World trip, one of the biggest questions families ask is: Is the Lightning Lane Premier Pass really worth the extra cost? After trying it out with my own family of four at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I have plenty of insights to share.

Our Family’s Experience with the Premier Pass

We decided to purchase the Lightning Lane Premier Pass on a Hollywood Studios day—because, let’s be honest, this park has some of the most popular rides with the longest wait times. And for my boys, those rides are the highlights of the day.

The Premier Pass gave us the freedom to go at our own pace. We weren’t tied to return times, and we didn’t have to stress about what to book next. We simply walked into the LL queue of our favorite attractions in whatever order we wanted. That kind of flexibility is priceless when you’re traveling with kids.

That said, even with the Premier Pass, we couldn’t quite fit in every single thing. We missed a few of the shows we had hoped to see, but honestly? It didn’t ruin our day. We still had an amazing time and hit the attractions at the top of our family’s list.

When the Premier Pass Makes Sense

✨ If your top attractions are concentrated in one park. For my family, during that particular trip – that park was Hollywood Studios—because so many of the rides my boys love are there, and that park seems to feel the most crowded to us. But for another family, the Premier Pass might be most valuable at Magic Kingdom, where there are dozens of attractions spread across the park.

✨ If money isn’t a concern. For families who value convenience and time above all else, the Premier Pass can be absolutely worth it. You’ll maximize your day and minimize waiting, especially during busy seasons.

✨ For ride-focused families. If your group loves attractions more than shows or parades, the pass is a great fit. You’ll be able to ride back-to-back without constantly checking the app or managing return times.

When You Might Skip the Premier Pass

⚖️ If you’re on a budget. The cost adds up quickly for a family, and it isn’t essential for having an amazing day at Disney.

⚖️ If you’re flexible. With a smart strategy—like rope dropping, splitting up for different priorities, and booking regular Lightning Lane selections—you can still do your must-dos with much shorter waits.

⚖️ If shows and experiences are your priority. Since the pass is best for rides, it won’t necessarily help you see more stage shows or nighttime entertainment.

Our Takeaway

For us, the Premier Pass was a fun splurge that made our Hollywood Studios day feel effortless. The flexibility and reduced stress were incredible—but it’s definitely not a necessity. Next time, we may try splitting up and using our regular Lightning Lane strategy instead.

Bottom line: If you’re all about rides and money isn’t a big factor, the Premier Pass is amazing. If you’re more budget-conscious, you can still have ABSOLUTE blast without it.

Choosing whether to purchase the Lightning Lane Premier Pass really comes down to your family’s priorities. For some, it’s worth every penny. For others, it’s a nice extra but not required.
